Emergency shelter

La Maison offers emergency shelter to French-speaking women and their dependants facing intimate partner and family violence. You don’t have to go through this alone.

If you are in immediate danger

Call 911 or your local police service immediately.

If you can’t speak, turn the volume down and don’t hang up: police will automatically be sent to your home. If you don’t want to call the police, contact a crisis centre or your local shelter, or dial 211 to get the number.

If you are not in immediate danger

Take time to plan what comes next.

If you are planning to leave, don’t hesitate to talk to someone you trust. You can also reach a Fem’aide counsellor at 1-877-336-2433 (femaide.ca) or a La Maison counsellor at 647.777.6433.

If you want to leave

If your partner is violent, leaving is your right. Practical, financial and psychological solutions exist. Prepare your departure as best you can: afterwards, it may be difficult to return home to retrieve important documents or belongings.

Prepare a safety plan with a La Maison counsellor (647.777.6433) or a Fem’aide counsellor (1-877-336-2433), and memorize it in case you need to leave quickly.

If you can’t leave

If you can’t leave or hope to change the situation, remember that the abuser must acknowledge his wrongdoing and accept help. Expressing regret does not mean he will change. Change takes time and the situation may become violent again: plan for your safety and take steps to protect yourself.

If you are worried about someone close to you

Contact a Fem’aide counsellor at 1-877-336-2433. Fem’aide offers French-speaking women facing gender-based violence support, information and referrals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and also responds to victims’ loved ones.
